Some recent developments and articles of interest:

  • Public administration in the 21st century is undergoing dramatic change. This is the case not only in advanced economies but also in many parts of the developing world. Problems faced by governments are increasingly complex, ‘wicked’ and global, rather than simple, linear, and national in focus.  But prevailing ideas about public sector reform often do not fully encompass the significance or implications of these wider developments. A paper from the United Nations Development Programme argues that public sector reform efforts in developing countries should embrace these changes selectively and draw on a range of public management models that are appropriate to different contexts while putting the needs and interests of citizens at the heart of reform.
  • The Australian Productivity Commission released the Digital Disruption: What do governments need to do? (PDF) report last week. The report reviews and interprets expert opinions on disruption in order to inform governments about the policy tasks posed by digital technologies; providing context for productivity growth in a time of digital transformation.
  • Consumers are expecting an increased social experience when interacting with digital content. Michael Spencer questions if virtual reality can help humanity become more collaborative and increase the collective intelligence.
  • Teams of the future need to be different from those which companies are training today. The best teams don’t come ready-made, they are discovered, nurtured and encouraged to become strategic advisers with innovation at their heart. Geoff Smith asks the question How innovative is your IT department?
  • Robot companions were once only portrayed in science fiction movies, now with the exponential advancement of technology robots maybe health care assistance within the next ten years. GovInsider takes a look at how robots can help an ageing population.
